Stand Out to the Studs: How to Write a Dating Profile

You’ve been single for quite a while so it doesn’t take much of a push from your friends and family for you to create a dating profile. You open up your laptop and pull up the site. As you stare at the blank screen with your fingers resting on the keyboard however, you realize that you have no idea what to put on this thing.

You know what you want to say but you don’t really know how to word it in a way that it will interest anyone. Writing has never been your forte.

We’re here to tell you not to give up and slam your laptop shut in frustration. We can help you fill this puppy out with these tips on how to write a dating profile.

1. Delve into the Little Details

If all your dating profile tells someone is you like to read, go hiking, and walk your dog, that doesn’t really make you sound unique. Many people love doing these exact same things.

Instead of typing up this basic information, it’s much better to elaborate and add in fine details. So instead of simply saying “I love to read”, name a few book series that you enjoy. Rather than exclaiming “hiking is the best”, name off a few trails that you’ve tackled.

These details spice things up and make you sound less generic and more like an individual.

2. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

If you have walls of text and no pictures of yourself, that’s not going to gain you much attention. Same goes if you post pictures but they are the most unflattering ones from your Facebook page.

Go through the collection of photos you have of yourself and include the best ones.  If you aren’t the best writer in the world you can actually solve that issue with photos.

For example, if you love horses post pictures of yourself horseback riding. This shows any potential partner that you love horses without you having to come out and type it.

3. Give them a Conversation Starter

Starting a conversation is not easy whatsoever. Sometimes you can sit on a blank message screen for hours trying to think of something that isn’t the generic “Hi, how are you this evening”? It’s for this reason that you’ll get way more responses if you have a conversation starter on your profile.

It can be a short prompt like “tell me what your favorite book series is”. This gives potential partners a jump-off point to break the ice.

4. Watch Your Structure

If you type up your profile without breaking your paragraphs it’s going to be a little hard on the eyes. Potential partners won’t be able to get passed the word chunks to decipher what you’re trying to tell them.

Also, make sure that each of these paragraphs transition into something new about yourself. It makes it much easier to skim through which means people are more likely to read your entire profile.

5. Go Ahead and Show Your Weirdness

Some people are a little ashamed of showing all their weirdness on their profile but weirdness makes you sound fun in most cases. While the fact that you snort when you laugh or that you keep a collection of Gundams may turn some people off, others will love it.

Go ahead and put your entire self out on the table by being open with your weirdness and embracing it. It’s the best way to meet someone as strange and fun as you are.

6. Keep things Positive

Even if you don’t like yourself too much you want to still stay positive. Don’t put on your profile that you’re looking for love even though you gave up a long time ago and have already accepted you’ll spend your life with your cats.

It’s okay if you can’t think of anything positive to say because you can enlist a little help. Nobody knows you quite as your family and friends do so if you’re struggling in this department, ask them to list off good traits about yourself.

7. You’re a Package not a Single

Okay, you’re technically single. If you weren’t, we hope you wouldn’t be on a dating site. What we mean by you’re a package and not a single is that you’re not only one thing.

You’re a complex individual. So, while you can certainly put on your profile that you love your job, that’s not the only thing that you should put. Your profile needs to reflect all of you, not just one part.

8. Check for Mistakes

We can’t stress this enough, read over your profile before you hit the submit button on this site or any dating site for that matter. Nothing will make someone hit the back button faster than a profile that’s riddled with spelling and grammar errors.

Pro tip, if you read your profile out loud to yourself you’ll catch more mistakes than if you read it silently. If you’re simply bad at catching these errors, you can also have a family member or friend read over it for you.
