Madly in Love: 8 of the Most Romantic Movies to Take Your Longtime Partner To See

Whether you’d like to admit it or not, everyone loves a good romance movie.

Even though they may not all reflect real life, romantic movies allow you to step out of the real world for a couple of hours.

But, there are a lot of great romantic movies out there, and, a lot of terrible ones. So, which ones are actually worth watching?

Check out this guide to learn about the top romantic movies to take your lifelong partner to see.

1. The Big Sick

While a lot of romantic movies are too good to be true, The Big Sick is one of those rare romantic movies that is actually based on a true story.

The movie is written by power couple Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon. Obviously, we know this movie has a happy ending, as the two are now married.

However, this movie is less about the plot and more about the amazing characters it holds.

The movie tells their real-life love story, in which Kumail and Emily meet in Chicago and start casually dating. While the relationship is great at first, Emily soon learns that Kumail doesn’t think he’ll ever be able to have anything serious with Emily, as his parents are trying to arrange his marriage.

Then, things get really complicated when Emily slips into a coma (yes, this really happened to the real-life Emily!), and things are drastically put into perspective for Kumail.

If you watch this movie in Alberta, Canada, then you might also want to check out Dear Evan Hansen while you’re there. You can use this link for presale passwords.

2. An Affair to Remember

An Affair to Remember is truly one of the greatest romantic movies of all time.

This movie centers around the idea that love often comes when you least expect it and at the worst time. An Affair to Remember, starring the iconic Carry Grant and Deborah Kerr, starts with a whirlwind romance on a ship.

After disembarking the ship, the two make a promise to meet on top of the Empire State Building.

While the plot is simple, this movie is so good that it’s actually raved about in another extremely famous romance movie, Sleepless in Seattle.

3. Titanic

There’s not much to say about the movie Titanic that hasn’t already been said.

If you were too young to see this movie in theaters, ask anyone you know who was old enough, and they likely saw it at least 5 times.

Starring the great Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, the Titanic is loosely based on a true story about a British ship that was set for New York City.

But, as we all know, an iceberg got in the way. Luckily, before all that happened, we get to hear the fictional tale of Jack and Rose, two star-crossed lovers who met aboard the ship.

Even if you’ve seen this movie a dozen times, it’s worth rewatching just to relive the iconic moments. And of course, you’ll need to follow it up by listening to a little Celine Dion.

4. The Notebook

While there are a lot of movies that are based on Nicholas Sparks’ novels, The Notebook is definitely a fan favorite.

And with a star-studded cast that includes Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling, and James Marsden, who couldn’t love this movie?

This movie is really a Romeo and Juliet-type story that is set in the 1940s. Noah, a poor working man, meets and falls in love with the beautiful Allie Hamilton. They spend one amazing summer together, and then Noah gets 1940s-style ghosted.

The two reunite later on in life, but this time, Allie is engaged, which clearly makes matters a lot more complicated.

What makes this movie so great is that it’s told from the perspective of an older Noah.

This is one movie where you’ll definitely want to have tissues for the ending.

5. Call Me By Your Name

Just when we thought they didn’t make romantic movies like they used to, the director Luca Guadagnino gives us the masterpiece that is Call Me By Your Name.

Based on the novel by Andre Achiman, this movie tells the story of the precocious 17-year-old, Elio Perlman (played by Timothee Chalamet) and his crush on his father’s handsome doctoral student (played by Armie Hammer). The movie is set in Italy in the summer of 1983 and is as much as a coming-of-age story as it is a love story.

6. When Harry Met Sally

Meg Ryan, the Big Apple, and Nora Ephron= The makings of a great romantic movie.

This is a delightful film that’s about a pair of quirky New Yorkers (played by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal) who are trying to answer the age-old question: Can a man and a woman really be “just friends”?

Meg argues yes while Billy argues no. If you want to know who wins this argument, you’ll have to watch the movie.

7. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

To say that Breakfast at Tiffany’s is just a romantic movie would be doing it a great disservice.

Based on the novella by Truman Capote, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is also an iconic piece of fashion history.

The huge pearls, little black dress, and beautiful updo wore by Audrey Hepburn in the first scene of the movie still makes for one of the most popular Halloween costumes to date.

8. Pretty Woman

No list of best romantic movies would be complete without including at least one movie that stars Julia Roberts.

While all movies starring Julia Roberts are spectacular, if you have to choose one, let it be Pretty Woman.

This movie tells the unlikely love story of a sex worker (played by Julia Roberts) and a wealthy businessman (played by Richard Gere).

This is another movie where the leading lady wears an outfit so iconic that it still remains a popular Halloween costume.
